Science- Nineteenth Symposium Science- The Nineteenth Symposium Science plays an important part in my life. I use it daily. I wake up to the alarm which uses electricity. I roll over and get out of bed- the bed is made up of man-made materials. I walk to the bathroom (the carpet is made from made of synthetic materials born from technology between the 1930’s and 1940’s- Nylon and Polyester). I turn on the water or flush the toilet using hydrodynamic forces- with the use aqueducts and pipes, the water is directed to a water treatment center to be analyzed and treated with the use of chemicals; it eventually gets pumped to my house. I brush my teeth with toothpaste, which is made from calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, sodium fluoride, and sodium lauryl sulfate- what a mouthful! I jump in the shower and use more chemicals to wash my hair and wash my body. I put on clothes that use technology to make them- cotton and rayon. I use my toaster to toast bread. I drive to work in my car. My life abounds with science and technology. Everything that I touch, eat, smell, listen, and wear uses some form of science. Life itself either uses photosynthesis or respiration (aerobic or nonaerobic) and the science of this is well mapped out. We humans are science users! Humans used wind to grind grains and to pump water from one place to another. We harnessed water to help bring in the industrial revolution by turning water wheels and then we switched to steam power (external combustion engine) using fossil fuels. We eventually switched to using petroleum and the internal combustion engine to harness power and for generating heat to keep us warm. Gas and diesel, petroleum, are the fuel cars, trains, boats, airplanes, and even to make factories run. In the 1940’s, we started using the atom (nuclear energy) to harness power initially for destruction then for good (making steam to turn turbines to make electricity). In my sex life, I use science and technology. Vibrators, dildos, and other toys are made of synthetic materials and the processes to make them are so filled with scientific technical jargon- I will spare you with that. They can be made from silicone, jellies, cyberskin, acrylic, metals (steel), and glass. Condoms are made from latex rubber, non-latex rubber, lambskin, and polyurethane. Some of the toys use electricity some don’t. The sex toys bring me joy and expand my experiences for the positive. The point I want to make is the fact humans are users of science and technology. The use is neither good nor bad, but rather the intent on the use. I use it daily and most of us in the Western Society do too. I appreciate what it gives me but I also understand the danger. We can poison the water, the air, and the land with the misuse of science and technology. Where do you stand with science and technology? Are you ready for the changes it brings? Great post and a good reminder! I have very mixed feelings about the way science is being used. So often it is not used in a moral way, and without caring or maybe without realizing the consequences.

Ain't that the truth VF?! Man, um ..... and 'woman' have discovered so much! And, when we're ill, we have med Science, and meds to make us well again!
