The Family Day
The Family Day My dear friends...the U.S. Thanksgiving is upon us. To say the least this has always been one of my absolute favorite holidays. Not that I don't love most holidays but Thanksgiving is there in the top three . As a , I'd start to get excited the day mom made her Bishop's Bread. Now Bishop's Bread isn't really that difficult as recipes go. It's a quick bread but it's got all kinds of ingredients and it's not cheap to make. I remember that most of all. Mom would make two precious loaves of it and admonish us that we couldn't afford to make more than that because it was so costly. One of those loaves was always earmarked for Thanksgiving and the other was for Christmas. Now don't be thinkin' that I loved that bread completely. Mom's bishop's bread had citron in it and candied lemon and orange rinds. I didn't really like any of these. In point of fact, I can't stand them. But the bread has one redeeming quality...CHOCOLATE CHIPS. Yep, a bread with chocolate chips in it automatically made it delicious in my 5 year old brain. The significance of the baking of the bread though was the thing. It meant that we were now starting the holiday season. Funny how so many of my memories directly correlate to food. Will have to ponder that one a bit LOL. Anyway, so the day of Thanksgiving started very very early. The 30 pound turkey had to be started at about 5 AM. Nothing says I love my family like making the sacrifice to get up at 5 AM to deal with a freakin' turkey. Later in life mom found this cranberry glaze recipe that she used for turkey's and ham's. I have to say that this is by far the BEST addiction...errrr addition...she ever made to the holiday meals. That glaze could make shoe leather taste good enough that you asked for seconds (I you not). As the day went on, Dad would be bakin' the pies. They were pumpkin and apple crumb (the apple crumb was always everyone's favorite so he'd make two of it...and we'd eat both that day ). OK...sometimes we'd get pecan pie as well...and dad was a texan so you can bet he made a wicked good pecan pie. The rest of the meal was fit for a royal family. There were candied yams (with mini marshmallows melted on the top...more like dessert but we didn't complain about that one bit...of course LOL ). The stuffing was always delicious...mom made it different every time. She never did have a set recipe until Stove Top instant stuffing came out LOL. There was chilled cranberry jelly (fresh from the can and cut in slices). The rolls were compliments of pillsbury but fresh-baked is fresh-baked no matter who mixed the ingredients. For some reason green beans were always there (not a huge green bean fan) and so were carrots cooked in beef boullion (makes them very tasty). There was a fruit salad with mom's secret sauce (nope, never learned that secret sauce but I've been searching for it...in vain...for years now). The fruit salad always had lots of different types of fruits in it...and (of course) the family favorite...mini marshmallows were thrown in the mix. Scalloped potatoes were to die for with all that cheese. And last (but never least) mashed potatoes and gravy rounded out the meal. Us would help prepare things as we got older but were relegated to watching TV most of the time. The classics were always on in those days before VCR's and DVD's. We could only watch Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving when they played it...not when we wanted to watch it. We'd eat at around 4 PM every year. This meal took hours to prepare and we'd savor all of it. Ooohing and aaahing our way through every tidbit. Once we were done eating, we'd all go for a walk. Now this may not be unusual for other families but we didn't pal around as a family so that after-Thanksgiving constitutional was always a highlight. As I got older, the green beans got left out of the meal and we went to the movies after the meal to watch a new release. Everyone who didn't have a place to go was always invited over for the festivities and yes, we had pie when we got home and then went for our walk. It's family time after all...and at least for that day, everyone is family and it's all good. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!! |

thank you lissi, this day is for more than just having a day off from work it's a day we should all use as a time to be with family and reflect upon ourselves and be glad for what we have. too often too many are focused on what they want and don't have. we are fortunate to have so much... thank you lissi, hope everyone had a greatday A persons heart will tell you how they lived, and perhaps died But it can never tell how it loved.
