Grandma's Possum......

When i was a little girl one of my favorite memories was,
every weekend my Mum, Brother, Sister & I would pile into the car & head off to visit my Grandma & Auntie Cathy.

My Auntie was an Ex Nun & took on the role of taking care of my Grandmother.

Auntie Cathy is my Angel.

When we got to Grandma's we would spend most of the day there, more often than not heading home after supper in the evening.
The back yard was enormous & there were thousands of nooks &
crannies for us to play hide & seek in, not to forget the old cubby house made out of old fruit boxes in the yard.
We all carved or painted our names into the old cubby.
It's been recently pulled down but the boards bearing our names have been kept in a safe place in the Shed at Grandma & Cathy's.

We would pick Cherries & Peaches from the trees & blackberries from the bush.
They would be stewed up, made into jams or just eaten by the tone fresh.
I love stewed cherries & cream.
I would eat so much fresh boiled beetroot from the garden i would pee pink....
I thought i was dying the first time that happened & the house was in fits of laughter.

Grandma raised 14 so on the weekends all the other Aunts uncles & cousins would stop in at different times for a visit too. It was great because we'd get to see everyone.

There was never a shortage of playmates & one of my younger Aunties was a scream to have around, she would always get us wound up , giggling & running amok,
all in fun mind you, we were always respectful of Grandma's House.
I can't EVER recall a harsh word or an argument among any of us.

There were so many Aunties in our family that we couldn't understand why Grandma was just Grandma, so us used to call her Auntie Grandma.
Pretty darn cute now i think about it lol

Auntie Cathy would always have something fresh baked & delicious for afternoon tea & i would always take pride of place at the table because i LOVED my cup of tea & when i was at Grandma's or my Auntie Kay's i was never told No when it came to me sitting up like the grown up's & having a cup of tea.

lol When Auntie Kay used to baby sit us she used to bribe me,
"If you eat all your sandwiches, crusts & all, i'll make you a pot of tea."
My best effort, at about 8 years old, was seven cups in a row lol
To this day i can't get by without me cuppa tea.

Ok back to grandma's house......

All of us would sit around the little kitchen table , eating, drinking, sharing our news or funny stories, laughing & singing songs.
As we were never pushed to the side, in fact we were expected to participate.
Those afternoons around Grandma's kitchen table taught me how the converse & listen to multiple conversations at once & not miss a beat at responding to any of them on que at the appropriate moment.

It was a skill that, in Later years, my Husband would sit in awe of.....
All those women, all those conversations & not one of us missed a thing the other said.
It was a funny thing to witness if you ever took time out to just sit back & watch the goings on i can tell ya.

As the afternoons wore on & things mellowed out a bit my Brother, Sister, a dozen cousins & i would sit & play with Grandma's wonderful button collection. The best times with those buttons was when me Bro & Sis got to play with them without all the others....All the more treasure for us then lol.
Silver, gold, bronze, some with jewels in them, mother of pearl, big buttons, small buttons every shape size & colour of the rainbow.
We would pretend we were pirates & these buttons were our treasure, we'd play with them until Auntie Cathy would say it was time to gather them up & put them away for safe keeping.

I can remember so often sitting out on the front porch in the early evening, Grandma would come out with her mouth organ & start playing away while tapping her dear old foot in beat too her music.
We would all beg her to sing us this song she would sing us all the time & every time she did she would get the same reaction from us.

The song went like this.......

The cat's got a sore toe,
a gumboil.,
a belly ache,
a pain in his big toe
and a pimple on his Bum.

We would squeal with laughter at how rude & funny it was to hear Grandma say "Bum."
She would lead into the song with her mouth organ, sing the lyrics, then finish off with more on the mouth organ, her toe tapping the whole time & the shrieks of laughter from her grand didn't stop till she put the mouth organ away.

We would often stay for supper when all the other relatives had gone home.
While Auntie Cathy & Mum cooked supper, my brother would play the piano, Sis would, no doubt, be playing with her baby doll or pretending she was a nun & i would take up my position laying on the sofa with Grandma stroking my hair telling me it was as soft as possums fur. Grandma used to call me her little possum all the time....
I was the only little possum in the whole family....
How special did i feel.

I was her possum till the day she died but the Aunties still all say,
"Here comes Grandma's little possum," when ever i walk into a room full of family.

Guess what my next tattoo is gunna be!? Yep the good old Aussie Marsupial know as the Possum!!!

We would drive home at dusk, the sun low in the sky & through squinted eyes Mum & us would sing songs all the way home harmonies & all.

It was Bitter Sweet driving home because we knew once we got there, the Step Father was home & all out smiles & Singing would soon stop.
These times with my family are the only real loving beautiful memories i have of my childhood, the rest was a cruel mess, i am so grateful i have these to flash back to whenever i need or want too.

I loved these times, they were all far too soon gone, but remain forever in my heart such precious memories.

What is your best childhood memory?

Sounds like some some fun!.

I can imagine there was a lot of laughing going on between you all that day.
I must say i got the giggles when you said your poor Mum fell in the creek.

My daughter would fish 24/7 if given the chance, i'd be happy to just sit by the water & zone out
or float around in a boat.
I love the water it makes me peaceful inside.

Thanks for sharing Chula Hun

Kisses

Lovely reminicences Sharon.
My childhood memories? Oh so many. But one of the best was when we were having tea in the garden and a frog jumped into the milk jug! My mother's face was a picture. Plus she was more worried about the poor frog than the milk.
And my dad taking me down to the local recreation ground to play cricket. He even used to put his lawn mower in the back of the car, and mow a stip of grass over against the fence to play on so the ball would bounce more like on a proper pitch!
The days when I was about eleven and first discovered going fishing. After a while my mother got used to me only coming home for meals in the summer; we were down by the river from dawn till dusk all day every day if we got the chance.

Dreamy Hun,

this post has been a really lovely one for me.
I've really enjoyed everyone's input & your memories are no exception.

I'm sure your mothers face with the frog on the milk jug would have been one of those Kodak moments for sure.

How great your Dad went to those extremes for you to be able to play the game you love so dearly, i'm guessing your dad is a cricket buff himself!?

As for your trips down to the river they always sound wonderful & romantic,
who'd of thunk fishing romantic lol or maybe it's me & my own thoughts about being in or around water. I just relax completely & flow with it.

Thanks for helping make this post such a nice one for me.

I love that so many people here have been happy to share their memories with me, it's kinda special i think!!!
