Keep the bread, pass the ambience, please....

Don't get me wrong, I love food and having new dining experiences but I think ambience plays as much as role as the fare, itself. I'll admit, I prefer international cuisine over American fare most of the time and, equally, I really don't enjoy those chain restaurants that are so crowded and loud, I can't hear myself chew!!!

So here's just a few of my memorable ambient dining experiences:

Amadeus at Fernwood-Milwaukie, Oregon

An 'upscale' restaurant in the Portland metro area. This place is in an old house built sometime around the turn of the century. It's beautiful!!!! Downstairs, there is a wine cellar/bar combined with a huge stone fireplace and some comfy chairs where one can have a pre-dinner cocktail and listen to their vast collection of Big Band, Classical, etc. records. Nope, that's not I typo, I said records. You know, those 12 inch vinyl discs that play music??!!! The restaurant has two floors. The second floor has a veranda that overlooks the Williamette River. The food is pricy, but the view and atmosphere is worth it.

Unknown-San Francisco, California

Yes, it has a name, I just have a poor memory. While the restaurant is quite large, it has high ceilings and is light and airy. They serve a lot of seafood, which is not my bag, but the ambience overrides the menu selection. It sits at the beginning of PCH and overlooks the Pacific. A few hundred yards down the beach is Seal Rock.

Hackney's on Lake-Wilmette, Illinois

If your a health conscious eater, run away!!! It's a heart attack waiting to happen notorious for their Brick o' french fries and Brick o' onion rings and great burgers. There's more than one location but the one on Lake St. has outdoor seating with a nice garden and a goldfish pond. You'd almost forget the traffic whizzing by, as Lake is well traveled. I love to eat outside!!!

Pizzeria Uno-Chicago, Illinois

If you can get through the long wait on the weekends, bring a few candles in your pocket, because this place is dark, dark, dark!!!! A perfect relaxing setting to enjoy your overly filling original Chicago-style deep dish pizza.

Angelina's-Chicago, Illinois

Ever thought of opening a restaurant in your dining room?? Well, this is it. This little Italian place can't have more than 20 tables. The food is spectacular and the intimate setting is warming. Last I was there, the old Italian woman who ran the place sat down to break bread and enjoy a glass of wine with us!!! Just like home.

Do you have any favorite restaurants in your travels or in your neighborhood where the ambience is just to your liking???

Eat peacefully.....

Dream in color, because the world is not in black and white........
