Drinks/Dinner March 12-24

It has been a slow two weeks as several of my friends have been on vacation, sliding down the mountain slopes of Utah.

That and there isn't much to report other than I have hit several places as sort of a repeat. The best part of that can be said that the service and quality of the preparation of the food and/or drink was consistent.

Edited to add: Snicker's, Cleveland

My long time dining partner I talked into going to this long time great restaurant. We got an amazing booth that was central to the entire diningroom and had very attentive, hospitality oriented service. We first ordered calamari as that is one of his favs and unfortunately found a few rubberband like chewy pieces. This was very quickly replaced with the Chicken Cigars that had a great wasabi dip that paired exceptionally well with the balsamic glaze drizzle garnish on the plate. We opted for a light night of their pizzas for entrees. They have a very delicious specific type of asiago bread that they offer to dip with flavoured olive oil and it doesn't stop there. The pizzas have a unique dough that has a good bite and a chewy, somewhat sweet middle. I ordered the Barbeque Chicken that had a sharp and tangy barbeque sauce that went exceptionally well with the caramelised onion and thin apple slices. He ordered the Pesto Chicken which is my usual that is decadent with basil pesto, goat cheese, chicken, sun roasted tomatoes and pine nuts. The kitchen spares no ingredient which will always make me return.

Carrabba's Italian Grill, Brooklyn

This was a surprise return, to a different store location, for a birthday celebration. The party ordered calamari, which was tender and fresh. However I have had better breading and found this a bit heavy. The bruchetta that was ordered as an app was nice. I ordered the daily special feature of macadamia nut crusted trout with the lemon butter basil sauce. It was simply delicious and cooked perfectly to yield a delicate, moist flake -- hard to manage with such a thin fish filet. Their cavattapi had more sauce than the Westlake location, which I enjoyed. I even delighted in the beauty of the trout's amazing blue and silver skin. (I'm such a foodie dork). My dining partners had the scallops and a steak. I would go to Carrabba's just for one of their new signature cocktails called the Rosso Robino Martini. It is made with Absolut Ruby Red Grapefruit flavoured vodka, mango syrup and cranberry juice. The most interesting part -- parsley is muddled and combined with the alcohol and then the cocktail is garnished with a cinnamon stick. It was so delicious it rates as one of the two best martini like creations I've ever had. Go there and try it. It is not a sweet rot your tooth out sort which their new Pommegranite martini seems to be, however was good but not as fabulous. I suspect the sweetness of the Pommegranite Martini comes from the sweet peach flavouring of Absolut Apeach vodka. With dinner I ordered the Italian Sartori Pinot Grigio which paired nicely with the sweetness of the beautiful trout. Fun was had by all.

Lolita's, Tremont Neighbourhood

I LOVE their happy hour deal. The small plates that can be ordered before 6:30 are fantastic and at a bargain price of $5 each. My friend and I shared the prosciutto flatbread pizza that is absolute perfection with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes. The mac and cheese, as always is bursting with assertive flavours and is simply to die for. It is made with a specific goat cheese that I must find out on how to buy for myself! The rosemary is very bright in this dish and is best with a few coarse grinds of the pepper mill. This is not a vegetarian mac and cheese either as it has pieces of moist and very soft chicken breast. The mussels were in a zippy sauce that had gorgeous slices of garlic and was sprinkled with chorizo sausage. I forgot the name of the cocktail I had but it was ginger infused vodka, fresh lime juice, Grand Gala (a cheaper version of Grand Marnier). It was by far too sweet for my taste, but if that's your thing -- go for it. They also feature a glass of white or red, Lolita's choice from their very well stored list of wines for $4 a glass. Next time I'll trust the bartender's choice in wine and might try the kobe burger.

Repeat dining: Melt, Nuevo Acapulco, Johnny Mango's

Repeat watering holes: Old Angle, Flying Monkey, Edison's, Panini's West 6th, Parma Tavern

Cheers!
