First Halloween story of 2012, non-erotic Chapter 1

With This Ring

“Joshua M. Fox Sr. was a man of many admirable qualities, with a heart so big, as to give more to others then to himself. He was a man of few secrets, and the few he had were between his God and him. He passed away with his secrets. He is survived by his , Lucius D. Fox, Lucius's wife Patricia, and twelve year old grandson Joshua M. Fox II. His smile will be missed at the mission cafeteria on holidays, the lack of his presence will be felt at the United Church Assembly of which he was a deacon. But we know that despite not having the use of this physical shell, he will be with us, in all the places we've known him to frequent. So I ask those here, not to say good-bye to Joshua, but to ask him to give you a call, next time he's going to stop by, to say hello.” Pastor Simpson looks toward the lifeless body laying in the box and says, “See you next visit Josh.”

With those words Pastor Roy Simpson ended his eulogy. Guests at the service began filing past the empty body of Joshua Fox, to take one last look at their good friend. His body was displayed just the way he asked it to be, in his last will and testament. The casket had to be regulation and all, to appease the health department. But it looked just like an old time wooden coffin, complete with antique lace around the edges. Everyone said their, so longs, except his grandson, who remained at the back of the chapel taking candid pictures of the friends and family. He used his phone cam, rather then a digital one, so he wouldn't attract attention. Nobody noticed him clicking away on his phone, not even his mom and dad. Even though they hoped Grand-pap was still with them, it still pained their hearts to see his body laying there. Josh knew, without a doubt, grand-pap was still around. Maybe not here in the chapel, but still around. That's why Josh was taking a bunch of pictures. He's gonna make sure Grand-pap doesn't miss how very touching his funeral was. He even audio recorded parts of the nice things people said about his Grand-pap.

Pastor Simpson was about to close the casket when he noticed Josh, still sitting alone in the rear of the room. He stopped closing the lid and walked out of a side entrance, leaving the two Joshua's alone. Grand-pap and Josh were always very close, all his young life. He wasn't old enough to not care about Grand-paps stories, and to not help him with his garden. Grand-pap always knew how to contact Santa, so he'd get exactly what he wanted for Christmas. Josh almost drowned once when fishing, but Grand-pap saved him. The two of them were like best friends from a past lifetime, reunited after many years absence. They were very close. Josh couldn't stop Grans-paps heart attack though.

Josh arrived at the wake about ten minutes after the rest of the people. How very strange to see so many people who didn't come to see grand-pap when he was alive, but now, take time from their busy schedules to come eat free food, and pretend to be sympathetic. I wonder what grand-pap thinks of them? Josh joined the festivities, and the reminiscing conversations most were having. No sadness, absolutely, no crying. He would want it this way, with all the people still stuck here in their bodies, celebrating his life on earth. Josh worked his way through the joyous crowd, to his destination, next to his mother.

“Mom, David and his Dad are going up to Slippery Rock creek to their cabin, for the weekend. Would it be okay if I go with them?” Josh asked. “They're leaving at 6:00 tonight, and I really need to get away from all this. Please. I'll be back on Sunday evening. Mr. Kirk has Monday off. Please.”

Pat, looked him right in the eyes for a few moments, like she was searching for an ulterior motive. Not seeing any give away movements, in his micro facial features, that he may be hiding something, so she grants permission. He maneuvered through the crowd as quickly as he could, coming upon the Kirk family.

“Mom says, I can go with you guys, can your brother give me a ride home to get my stuff, I've already packed. I figured Mom wouldn't mind having a few days alone with Dad. Nothing exciting ever happens at home anyways.”

David talked his brother into driving them to pick up Josh's camping cloths, swim trunks, and other sundries. It didn't take any convincing mom, to let him leave the party. There were so many old people there. They all hoped science would discover some process to keep them from getting very old like some of the older attendees at the wake. Ninety, is just too old.

Davids family lived only two doors down and across the street from the Fox's, so Josh was ready and waiting at Davids when the rest of the Kirk family arrived home. The boys eagerly packed the SUV and waited on Mr. Kirk to kiss Mrs. Kirk goodbye, guys only, this weekend. Three guys against the wilderness, well not quite, Josh thought. We'll be in a cabin with an Ice Box cooler, wood stove, and beds. Hey, I'll have to go to an outhouse when necessary, and there's no phone or wireless reception up there. We won't even have electricity, for computers. We'll be in touch with nature, and out of touch with technology. It was a quick hour and a half to the cabin. It's a real shame there's no phone reception up there. We can't call any of our girlfriends.

It 's about 10:00pm on Friday night, and Lu and Pat Fox are finally home, sitting down to rest. It's been a long day, Lu's father is buried, and life must go on without him. As Pat had just closed her eyes when her cell phone rang. She has a special ring-tone for Josh, set to ring like an old phone, a simple, ring....ring....ring. With this ring, she knows it's Josh calling. She forces herself out of her reclining chair, and over to her phone inside her purse, on the kitchen counter. With the fourth ring of the phone she flips it open to greet Josh, on the other end.

“Hello Josh, ya make it up there okay?” she inquires, with a weary voice. But instead of hearing Josh's voice, there was a dead silence on the other end. Pat says “Hello” again, “Josh what's wrong?” She was answered by more silence. It was then she raised her voice and asked, “Josh, is everything okay?” The phone connection was broken and the phone display showed, CALL ENDED. Pat began to panic, but decided it was just a bad connection, Josh was alright and would call back later. She put the phone back in her purse, got a glass of chilled water, and headed back to her soft chair.

You've really put some time into this. Thy storytelling is awesome, as usual.

Looking forward to part 2.
