With This Ring Part 2

Lu had the TV on, channel surfing, looking for something interesting to watch. He found one of their favorite shows, “The Dark Zone”. One of the first shows on television about ghosts and other dimensions, and lots of scary things. It was fun to watch the old episodes again, it was popular in syndication. Not only was it on, but the channel presenting it was having a Dark Zone marathon. So Pat and Lu cuddled on the couch instead of sitting in their chairs. Somehow holding on to one another made it a bit more exciting. Six episodes and three hours flew by in a blur. They didn't realize how late it was. The next episode had begun it's prolog, when Pat's phone rang.

Pat scrambled up and sprinted to the kitchen. She was eager to hear her 's voice, reassuring her he was safe. She flipped the phone open a moment after the third ring.

“Hello, Josh?” she asked, “I'm so glad to hear your voice.” But it wasn't her on the other end of the call.

“El.....el.... Jo... I..... lo....eed....” It's was a man's voice, all rugged and scratchy. It was like he couldn't make words, but he was trying to.

“Who is this, and where is my ?” Her voice was high enough to drown out the TV show.

Lu could hear her now, and raced to the kitchen. He grabbed the phone and began to yell, “Boy you'd better say something, right now. You're scaring your mother.” He too is hearing the voice on the other end, like it was trying to form the words. Suddenly the phone display showed, CALL ENDED. He flipped the phone closed, and told Pat. “It's probably a wrong number, Josh is fine, and in safe hands with Mr. Kirk. They went back to the living room and collapsed in their chairs. The mood was broken, and Pat kept hold of her phone.

Josh was laying back in a lounge chair, in front of the cabin, staring at the half moon and stars, in the clear sky. Everybody else was in the cabin getting ready for bed. Josh reminisced about all the times he and Grand-pap had come up here to go fishin'. In fact, it was across the creek and up stream about a hundred yards, that he'd almost drowned. That's where Grand-pap saved his life. His thoughts wandered off to, what was Grand-pap doing right now. Was he sleepin', meetin' with some other ghosts, or maybe walkin' roun' the grave yard. Or could he be doin' more than one thing at a time? His thoughts got interrupted by a stern voice coming from the cabin.

Mr. Kirk called out, not to loudly as not to disturb the animals, “Time to get ready for bed Josh, we're getting up early.”

Josh squirmed his way out of the chair, said goodnight to Grand-pap, walked into the cabin, and readied himself for bed. Josh had some bitter sweet dreams that night. His subconscious had him dream of the happy times he and grand-pap had together. He woke up a few times, with tears in his eyes, but a smile in his heart. Around 7:00am the smell of coffee and bacon beckoned him back to reality. Mr. Kirk had made breakfast for everybody. After they ate, they prepared for their trek through the lush green, fern filled forest. As early morning waned, they arrived at their destination. An old, old cabin with only one and a half of its stone walls left. Mister Kirk was an archeologist and they were helping him dig up the past of this deceased home. Mr. Kirk had been here a few times before, and had established the approximate age of the dwelling. by some left overs in the fire pit and other assorted artifacts. He informed them the homestead had been occupied in the early eighteen hundreds. The boys unpacked their equipment, set it up, preparing to help Mr. Kirk do some more digging.

The phone was silent the rest of the night, but neither of them got much sleep. Pat was up at 7:30 and made the days first pot of coffee. At five minutes to eight, Pat reached for her phone to call her father-in-law, as she had done for many years. He enjoyed hearing her voice wake him in the morning. She paused, there was no need to call him today, he's dead, and can't use the phone, she thought. She turned away, and as she did, the phone rang. Ring...ring....., she grabbed the phone, thinking it might be Josh, flipping it open, asking, “Josh how are you?” It wasn't her .

“Jo..sh, talk.., to, Josh.” The mans voice was forming words now. “Jo..sh, tal..k to Jo..sh.”

Panic gripped Pat like an anaconda, squeezing all calmness out of her. She dropped the phone, and it flipped closed as it crashed on the floor. She ran screaming up the stairs, jumping into bed next to her husband. The commotion woke Lucius, who was rubbing the sleep out of his eyes as she dove in.

“What's wrong sweetheart?” he asked, not sure if he wanted to know the answer or not. Pat explained the latest phone call to him. He was right, he didn't really want to know, but it was too late now. “Let's go back down stairs and call the police on the land-line and get them out here to file a report. I'm sure they'll know how to find this prank caller.”

“He used Josh's name, he wants to talk to Josh.” Pat desperately cried at Lu.

“It's probably one of my dad's friends who hasn't got the news of dad's death yet. Dad might have given him your cell number as an alternate, in case he doesn't answer his home phone, that's all.” How was he going to convince her, if he didn't believe it himself, Lu thought. But it's all he could come up with, on short notice. Pat refused to get out of bed, so Lu went down and called the police. He returned with two cups of coffee, handing one to Pat. “Some police will be here in about an hour.” He explained. “I'd rather you be dressed, and down stairs, when they get here.”

After her coffee cup was empty, she took off her house coat and pajamas, put on a dress, and make-up. Soon it was time to meet the police. An hour and a half, and most of another pot of coffee later, the officers finally arrived. It took a little over an hour to explain about the calls, and for them to explain what they would do to catch this caller.

The officer explained that they couldn't do much at the moment, that the cell phone tower nearest the Fox home was under repair. Until it was fixed, a triangulation using three towers to find out where the call originated, was impossible. “It should be up and running by tomorrow afternoon.. Until then, don't argue with the caller, try to keep him on the line as long as you can, so when we do trace the call, he won't be suspicious of the time we'll need. We'll hook a digital recorder to your phone for evidence later in court, when we put this guy in jail.” They hooked up the recorder to the phone, and said their good-byes.

Lu gave Pat a big comforting hug, and volunteered to be the one to answer the phone for the rest of their ordeal. Most of the afternoon was uneventful, and both Lu and Pat were playing scrabble, the word game.

“You remember Dad playing this game, it was his favorite? He said, it kept his whits sharp?” Lu had just finished winning the game, and was still celebrating, when the phone rang. Ring...ring.... Lu was making some drinks in the kitchen, and grabbed the phone, not remembering the mystery caller. “Hello Fox residence.”

“Talk to Josh,... to talk Josh...want talk Josh.”

The eerie voice, there was something familiar, sort of, but. Lu thought for a moment, then did as the police requested. He tried keeping the line open. “Who are you? What do you want?”

“Josh,....want to talk to Josh.”

The line closed and the call ended. At least there was a recording of it, there's proof. “We've got you now.” Lu whispered to himself.
