the heir of the devil part 1 of 10

"Listen to me… you have to leave… NOW!" A voice beckoned Evan. He couldn’t leave; it wouldn’t be reasonable, rational or even practical for that matter. He clutched his dagger closer. All of a sudden, he felt a shearing pain a little below his left shoulder. Blood spurted on the ground, spreading on his clothes; he dropped the dagger and squeezed his shoulder. The smell of blood, life seeping out, "I told you to leave, you should have heeded me, now live the life we loathe…" someone whispered; he strained his eyes, which were dimming every second, no one was there. Just the smoke and the darkness, the smell of burning flesh filled him until he could see no more, breathe no more. His life had ended, even before he could see the life that was his. Once again, the darkness engulfed him, made him hers. The darkness could bring him to life. It was a terrible choice; become one with the night. Depend on it to be reborn. Let the dark depend on him. Rule it…. The choice that designated him something he didn’t want to be; The Devil’s Heir.

1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Rihette settled in her chair as her mum placed the pancakes on her plate.

"Happy birthday, honey! I’m sorry I’ll be late today; but it’s a promise I’ll take you to the theatre the next Sunday!" Rihette nodded and assured her mum, "Don’t worry about it. We two could watch a movie tonight. I’ll keep things ready when I get back."

"Now that’s more relaxing! Thank you Ria!"

Rihette hustled to the main hall, pulled on a wind-cheater and stepped into the cloudy and not- so- cosy atmosphere outside. It had been ages since the sun had been out, but she liked it this way. She followed the usual way to college smiling at some known strangers politely.

"Hey Ria! Want a lift?" Mr. Jerk asked her as his flashy red car stopped nearby. She gave her sickly sweet smile and said with layered sarcasm, "Why not! My legs are not co-operating today…. Come on Rowan, you can’t expect me to join you after two years of me refusing to sit in that ostentatious thing of yours." She received the same please look from him and continued walking along the side walk. Rowan had proposed to her about say a hundred and five times! And each time she had to say no.

"Rule number 1," thought Rihette, "when you like someone because of their body or property, it’s lust, when you like them for their nature or because of the awe you have for them, it’s admiration, when you like them for shear attraction, it’s infatuation and when you don’t know the reason, it’s love at its purest best." She steadied her gait and walked past the traffic signal. All of a sudden she was mingled with the crowd. A part of ‘the crowd’, still each of them standing there was different. Rihette continued walking along the bend when she recalled a particularly sweet memory from the previous day- She had been walking at the same bend a little fast. Her eyes darted to the clock every now and then- it was getting late. Faster, I must walk faster, she urged herself. Someone (whose legs alone were visible to Rihette’s peripheral vision)walked casually in front of her. enjoying the breeze. She wanted to rush past him but ended up colliding with his back.

"Whoa! Slow down miss! You’ll land up with grazed knees and elbows if you keep running at bends like this…." She looked up and saw him. Was he an alien from some beauty planet or what? His impossible black eyes shone in spite of the sun’s absence. She stood there, gaping at his height, his voice his demeanor. She opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything.

"Ria! Weren’t you getting late?" asked Rihette’s inner self. She shook her head and said in a tone meant for innocence, "I’m… I’m sorry. I didn’t see you." He smiled pleasantly and shrugged indicating a hand to allow her to go ahead, she nodded abruptly and took up her 4 meter walk left to the college. Luckily, Rihette thudded into her seat (in the fourth row) just before the professor entered. Fortunately or unfortunately, the teacher was late….

Rihette smiled and continued walking. She half expected to meet him again. He was not there at the bend. Shrugging, she reached her class, which filled with hushed murmurs and the noise of people pulling out their files or folders. The girl sitting next to Rihette said looking into her file, "Hey Ria, when is the treat? Oh! By the way ‒ happy birthday!" She had to smile at the gesture, and replied, "During the first break, the café."
--

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you…

Happy birthday dear Ria…

Happy birthday to you." then there were claps; for Ria. She bowed and said graciously, "Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!" Most of her class mates stood around the table. The sweet people had arranged a cake for her.

"Go ahead, have your fill of burgers and anything the canteen’s got to offer!" Rihette accepted their smiles and thanks as she took out her credit card. It had been a long time since she had used it.

Hikari, a close Japanese friend said in her accented English, "Here! This is for you… it’s your day." It was a king size burger. She thanked God for it and was about to start chomping when the one guy she had least expected to meet showed up. He was as yesterday looking down right gorgeous. Some giggles and some hisses could be heard from the others sitting in the café. Rihette put her burger down and smiled, not knowing he was coming to her table. He took long strides (No, they were not long for him, considering his height) and smiled his heavenly smile and asked, "Mind if I share the table?" She nodded in the negative and he settled down in front of her. Rihette eyed him curiously, something about him was eerily different.

"So, I heard your birthday wishes. Happy birthday…uh…" She grinned and said, "Rihette, you can call me Ria."

"Alright then, happy birthday Rihette." She loved the way he ended her full name. It was best not to ask him to call her Ria. She blushed unexpectedly drawing an amused expression from that perfect featured face.

"I dashed into you yesterday, didn’t I?"

"Well, that you did. My name’s Evan. Third year."

‘Alright! So now a senior comes to wish me on my birthday…’

The others saw the two of them chatting casually. Evan didn’t seem to mind that all eyes were on him. He was used to it, owing to the rarity of perfections.

"So," Rihette could barely move her eyes away from his eyes, "What’s up?"

Evan shrugged and sighed, "Not much actually, I was wondering if you would like me to accompany you back home…"

YES! YES! YES! Hang on! That was quite unexpected or was it straight forward… maybe he could read people’s minds. He waited for a response. She said hesitatingly, "That… that would be fine. But I’m not punctual…"

"Do you go somewhere in the evenings? I know your mornings though!"

They laughed and Rihette said, "Nah… it’s not that. I try to rush home as fast as possible. There’s this anime ‘Chronicles of the wings’, I can’t live without it." Her eyes became distant as she recalled her position on the couch.

Evan’s jaw dropped. Rihette looked up, questions in her eyes, "What?"

"Do you mean ‒ Animax?"

Now it was her turn to gape, "Well yes, Animax."

"Do you know ‘card captors’? What about Holic and full metal alchemist and…"

Rihette cut him short and said desperately, "and Gun sword, trinity blood, solty rei…"

she stopped and said very haltingly, "Do you know Blood+?" He opened his mouth to say something but the bell pierced the air. After she picked up her things, Rihette looked on waiting for his answer.

Evan gulped down his excitement and said unbelievingly, "Yes I do!"

"Fine then! I’ll wait for you at our bend… we’ll talk about the rest of our interests then," Rihette said unable to compress her happiness by even a bit.

"Ya! See you at 2 then."

Rihette saw him walk past the rushing people; he seemed a lot more handsome with that chunk of common interest. Blood+! Now he was talking sense! Someone almost her age was actually interested in Animes. She didn’t realize when the professor came in, started and finished teaching and walked out.

Hikari came over her side, "Ria! You were looking lost throughout the lecture! Did he take you off your feet or what?"

Rihette said in mock pride, "Well he have some common interests and the same road home. So we decided to become friends!" They giggled and went on for their practical classes.
--

It was 1:45 on Evan’s watch. "I’ll wait for you … at our bend." Her sweet voice echoed through his ears for the thousandth time. It wasn’t as seductive as he was trying to make it seem. ‘Our bend’ she had said.

"Mr. Doran, could you please stop day dreaming?" the old hag as he called her yelled. He nodded guiltily and glared down at his blank page.

Somewhere behind him a girl said, "How does he get those marks with all this day dreaming?" Another voice, "The juniors said he was talking to the Ria girl. He has rejected every single human who tried to act as a friend to him and…"

"SILENCE PLEASE! A class is in progression," she shook her head and muttered, "This class! Full of dodos… not a single person worthy of being called a student…." Evan rolled his eyes and started going through the overflowing pages.

‘Who would want to be called a proper student ‒ worthy or unworthy?’ thought Evan. Half an hour more to go and then he could talk about Animax….

Rihette washed the test tubes carefully; she had finished her experiment earlier than the others had.

"Tomorrow is a half day, on account of the annual science meet for us professors", Mr. Borgia said in expectant tones. He knew the class would explode with giggles, whispers, and smiles. He had been the same way. Sighing he struggled to make the class quiet, "Please, maintain silence as well as your happiness. Those who have finished can leave…." Rihette hurried around setting the reagent bottles in her rack and emptying the beakers.

"Thank you, Sir," she said and stepped out into the cool air and rushed to the locker. Hikari came up behind her and said, "Ria! Turn around!" Rihette knew she was going to place her gift in her locker. Obeying her order, she turned around and said, "You done?" Hikari turned her around and exclaimed, "Yup!"

It was a beautifully wrapped box. Ms. Expert, Hikari grinned as she tore open the wrapper. Rihette lifted the box, she let out a gasp- a lovely violet and pink scarf lay inside. She pulled it out and shook her head unable to believe the beauty of the scarf.

"Dad bought it from Russia. I knew you adore scarves. Like it?"

"Obviously! The material is like water. It’s so good…." Rihette stopped bluntly. She felt as if someone had just douched her with ice. She stood frozen there. Her legs seemed unsteady. Holding on to her locker door she looked around, everything was engulfed in darkness. Where was Hikari? Where was she for that matter?

A dagger flew past her. "Help! Anybody there? Please…
