Back to Route 66....What a kick!

Southern California

Northbound on Interstate 15

Afternoon traffic

FRIDAY afternoon crawl through the Cajon pass

High desert

Mojave desert

Joshua trees and dust devils

Plume of smoke in the distance becomes eye candy for the lookie loos

Oro Grande exit...AM PM on the left, Concrete mixing plant on the right

Follow the road around the bend and.... PEACE!

You are transported back fifty years to a less stressful time

Two lane highway, rolling desert landscape... And to the left a green belt announces the Mojave river... An underground waterway draining the San Bernardino mountains

Old buildings and foundations line the highway
Remnants of former days

Filling stations
Motels
Coffee shops
General stores
Garages

I slow down and enjoy the ride

I let the road lead me back to yesteryear

21 cent gasoline

10 cent hamburgers

Rooms for $15.99 a night

I am cruising Route 66...

And I feel fine!

The only part of Route 66 I have not been on is the northern part. MB grew up in a small town on Route 66. We now live off Route 17 that follows the Atlantic from Virginia into Florida. I love taking the old HI way system. Once in a while you find a gem that survived the change to the new freeway system. When I drive old 17 I am a bit melancholy for the hay day of those quaint small towns.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Yes, I love the old highways too
I was feeling a bit sad driving 395 on vacation
It is mostly a 4 lane highway now...
When I drove it in my youth it was mostly 2 lanes. Back then I did not appreciate the beauty. I just wanted to get to were I was going and get there fast!

The first time I came out to California when I'd just gotten out of the army in the late 1950's I traveled Route 66 and first fell in love with the Mohave Desert on that trip. I decided at that time I'd one day like to live here. YEAH! The Time Traveler, little ole' me.. A neat post, Ed.. xoxo david

You are talking to a sick Raider fan
Think I did a post about it a long time ago...

I liked the TV show too. When I lived in South Carolina I used to drive the back roads all the time; they're so peaceful and picturesque and bring back lots of memories of a simpler time. So where are you headed?

Never ignore those who care for you
you will have lost diamonds
while you were collecting stones

I was going to visit my son. He lives in a small town in the Mojave Desert in California
