Getting to Third Base

Nothing earth shattering today. No angst troubling my soul. Nothing but sunshine and smiles.

For today, I got to watch my 4 year old grand in her first T-Ball game.

The Dodgers vs. the Twins. Little more interested in playing in the dirt and chasing butterflys than diving for grounders and shagging fly balls.

Little having fun.

Swinging a bat at a ball on the top of a stand.

Hitting it sometimes, missing it at others.
Running the wrong direction.
Crying tears over their failures, and jumping up and down over their successes.

As I watched them it reminded me that we approach life the same way sometimes.

We often swing and miss.
We often run the wrong way.
We cry over our failures.

But we also hit it out of the park on occasion.
We run the correct way every know and then.
We jump up and down over our successes.

The game ends, and everyone runs to get their drink and snack from the team Mom. They don't care about the score. They don't care about how they did. They don't remember their successes or their failures. They just remember having fun.

Then they run off to go play on the swings. Back and forth...just like life.

Ah to be a again...not caring about outcomes and only caring about having fun.

And for the record...our Dodgers kicked ass.

Now I think I'll go play on the playground.

P.S. For my British friends, "shagging" in this instance means catching.

Peace is my sister. wgf

I have a 2 year old grandson - he is priceless. I can't wait for him to play t-ball. I remember when my daughter did - the best part for her was picking her nose in the outfield and visiting the snack mom.

Woo Hoo! About the only baseball I can stand to watch -
the girls (or mine was ) standing ..then dancing ..then picking flowers.
the boys - determined to hit the ball and knocking over the tee
no one keeping score
everyone supportive and cheering
and the kids - so proud of their team t shirts and the hats that were far too big.

~ [blog kelidgh]~ I am, indeed

You're right on BOTH counts. I think as we get older we may change our definition of winning.

And of course, it's defined differently at different times. )

grandpas and kids together are perfect regardless of the endeavor.

Having grand kids has changed my whole way of looking at life..and has helped me rediscover unconditional love.

you and me both.

I don't know that we can ever make things like that the "biggest worry of the day", but I think we can help ourselves tremendously when we at least take the time to worry about those kind of things.

Maybe that will help put some of our other worry's in perspective.

you've painting the perfect picture of yesterday.

While I LOVE baseball..watching kids just playing was the pleasure.

One of the kids had on catchers equipment. He was so small, and the equipment so big, he couldn't walk. The coach had to carry him and stand him up behind home plate. lol

I love your bits of philosophy and perspective...your ability to notice and derive meaning from all around you. It's a rare trait.

I often watch my kids playing in the mud and wonder why I can't join them. Just for a minute...

And then I get back to the things that define my life as I know it today- laundry, cooking, cleaning, basic minutae. But one of these days, before they get too old, I'm gonna play with them in the mud.

When it comes to sex, I need a STRONG connection. Otherwise, the page just keeps buffering and takes FOREVER to load...

Do it the next time you see them. If you keep waiting...you'll wake up one day and they won't be playing in the mud any more.

I got on a slip and slide with the grand kids last summer. Had a blast...and so did they. And then we ran through the sprinklers.

Be a child again...it' totally worth it.

I will now go to bed with a huge smile on my face Lily. That's one of the nicest compliments I've ever received. Thank you.

what a great comparison!
Sometimes the simple things in life remind us of important lessons or things we forget to make time for... like fun

I love baseball, but there is nothing as fun as T-ball. Some of my best memories were made at T-ball games. My little niece used to get so excited because she got a sno-cone after the game. That was the whole reason she played. What a great blog post.

Thanks for the comments and thanks for stopping by.

With four boys I lived on baseball fields. Played myself for 30 years, coached all my kids...

And I too loved the sno cones.

I think we have to make a concerted effort, and a conscious decision to spend time with them while we have them. We keep saying later, and one day wake up and later has already come and gone.

Perfect summation, thank you.

But in some ways it is about wins and losses.

In a prior life I might consider that a loss because there was some work thing I needed to do. In this current life...BIG TIME WIN!!!

Thanks

there always something about watching a ballgame that takes me back to those days. the smell of the dirt, the enthusiasm on the kids faces, Im not really sure what it is, but sometimes even though I may not know anyone playing, you can find me there at the game, lol.
