Prince... Call Me Selfish But...
Prince... Call Me Selfish But... From a self-serving point of view, I'm kind of disappointed by today's news of Prince and Warner Brothers' settlement returning ownership of his Rights to the music recorded on that label some time ago. The dispute had caused him to sever his relationship with Warner and, also, change his name to that symbol during the nineties. My disappointment stems from the fact that Prince had threatened to re-record all of his Warner Bros., recordings, and I had been kind of looking forward to hearing alternate takes of his previous recordings. I've heard him do some great stuff on his live performances that are so different from the originals, so I know it would have been fun. Anyway, with the new deal there will be some new stuff, and, some new old stuff coming out subsequently. I already have a CD published without his blessing from back when this dispute originally kicked off. It's called "The Vault... Old Friends $ Sale", and whenever friends hear this they're caught by surprise. Not only is it great but, they've never heard most, if not all, the songs before! |

Sorry I'm responding so late. He had a dispute with Warner Brothers over control of his music, plus they wanted to release stuff that he didn't consider 'quality' material; I think to ensure they had no control over future production he officially changed his name (I think for the duration of his remaining contract life); thus, they had no say, rights, or earnings from stuff like "3121", "Musicology" (which sold big) or anything from that period. The good thing from all that was I have songs that I probably would never have heard if there wasn't a dispute, "The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale".

My disappointment lies in the fact that I would have enjoyed hearing different renditions of songs I knew so well (when he changes up the arrangements of his songs... you wouldn't believe how great they sound!). Otherwise, there's no disappointment.
