Tending the garden

After a long day in the yard, thought I would sit down on the back porch and write a quick post. I have quite a few flower gardens and it seems I have been invaded by ... elm trees. There are battalions of tender seedlings all lined up to do battle for supremacy of my fertile soil. It is a war of attrition and will. So far, the pesky little beggars are winning.

All that aside, your mind wonders during monotonous tasks. Plenty of time to think about life, sex, and rock and roll. I thought I would share some of those thoughts with you.

If you tend your garden, pleasant surprises will occur. A couple of seasons ago, I bought Mexican Petunias to provide annual ground cover. They puttered along but failed to sprout the next season. Oh well, live and learn. Towards the end of last season, I trimmed the trees and shrubs higher off the ground to allow more light and a neater appearance. Almost immediately, I saw the petunias return even though it was late in the season. This spring, they are thriving and as beautiful as ever. Who knew?

If you tend your garden, you soon realize that not everything belongs in your garden. See my comments concerning the elm seedlings from hell. Same sentiment for grass and weeds. However, it is more subtle than that. Your favorite stand of plants is becoming overgrown and dominating the view. As hard the decision is, sometimes you have to prune or even pull it out to allow growth.

If you tend your garden, you have to plant something new and different. It keeps everything vibrant and fresh. Moreover, nothing is quite as fulfilling as trying a new plant and see it thrive in its beauty. But beware, failure can and does occur quite often. Sometimes, you just have to admit that you are not good at growing __________ and move on.

If you tend your garden, tend to it yourself. Make the joys of success and agony of poor results your own doing. Nobody else deserves the credit or the blame. You can let someone do it or even hire it out, but you will never have passion towards your garden if you do.

Now, dear blog reader, I commend you for making it this far and leave you with a question. Am I discussing gardening or something else?
